An unlikely (and famous) trio joins together to raise awareness about addiction

You know how it is when you’re scanning through your list of unread emails — picking and choosing which ones you’ll read now or later? I am glad I spent time reading a particular email right now. The nation’s top doctor met with the stars of the TV show “Mom” to produce a public service announcement about addiction. It will air tonight [Thursday] during this popular TV comedy’s 9 p.m. airing.

How the PSA came about is an intriguing story.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and “Mom” co-star Allison Janney met by chance backstage at a “Unite to Face Addiction” concert last year, and Janney kindly invited him to the show’s set.

The Washington Post described what happened next:

Well, the doc took the former “West Wing”-er up on the offer, and the result was a PSA featuring Janney, Murthy and “Mom” co-star Anna Farris, which will air on the show’s Feb. 18 episode.

It’s an apt tie-in, since Janney and Farris play a mother-daughter duo both in recovery from alcoholism and drug abuse. Fortunately, Murthy’s comedic timing wasn’t tested in the 30-second spot. “Drug overdoses kill more Americans than car crashes,” he says.

You never know what will happen when you make allies and join forces.
